ISO 9000 Standards
ISO 9000 is a series of standards for Quality Management System. While ISO 9001 is meant for certification purpose, ISO 9000 and ISO 9004 provide vocabulary and guidelines respectively. The latest revision of the standard has taken place in September 2015. The ISO 9001 (Version 2000) replaced the older version (1994 version) of ISO 9001, ISO 9002 and ISO 9003. Now, the 5th edition of the standard (ISO 9001:2015) replaces ISO 9001:2008.
ISO 9001:2015 is based on the new seven principles of quality management, and is modelled on ‘process approach’. It advocates the P-D-C-A (Plan-Do-Check-Act) cycle for continual improvement and customer satisfaction. ISO 9001:2015 certification is for quality management system, and NOT a product certification scheme.
SS 506 Part 1 / OHSAS 18001
SS 506 Part 1 / OHSAS 18001 is the requirement standard for an OH & S System which helps a business or organization meet its health and safety obligations in an efficient manner. SS 506 Part 1 / OHSAS 18001 can be incorporated as part of the risk management strategy to address changing legislation, reduce risks associated with health and safety in the working environments for employees, customer and the general public. An Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Management System provides a framework for an organisation to identify and control its health and safety risks, reduce the potential for accidents, comply with legislation and improve operational performance. The specification has been designed to be compatible with the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 management system standards.
By adopting OHSAS 18001, it ensures that an organisation has the measures and controls to manage the risks associated with their activities. It will also demonstrate its commitment to stakeholders, improve operational performance through better accident management and reduced downtime with a corresponding reduction in insurance premiums and penalties for breach of legislation.
